The bridge has Grade II listed building status |
A landmark bridge on Teesside is to be out of use for more than two weeks while vital repairs are carried out. Middlesbrough's Transporter Bridge will close from 9 to 25 June. A free bus service will run hourly from the town to Port Clarence.
The work involves the replacement of the vertical pulley wheels, which carry haulage ropes from the winding house to the upper carriage of the gondola.
During the closure the visitor centre will also be closed.
This is because the work is being carried out immediately above the entrance.
Rodger Wakerley, principal engineer for Middlesbrough Council, said: "We apologise for any inconvenience this will cause, but it is for essential maintenance work which will help keep the bridge running smoothly in the future."
