The fish on offer is of unknown age and origin |
Householders on Teesside are being warned to be cautious of uninvited doorstep traders selling poor quality or wrongly-described fish. Trading standards officers have received reports of cold callers operating in Stockton and Hartlepool.
They are offering underweight portions of unlabelled fish.
An investigation is also ongoing after an 82-year-old man was persuaded to part with 240 for small trays of fish, and taken to his bank to withdraw cash.
'Unknown origin'
In other cases, the fish was offered at what was described as a "knock down price" of around 350 and samples shown included sea bass and monk fish although none of these was actually received.
The weight and quantity of the fish was found to be significantly less than claimed by the seller, there was no statutory labelling on the fish, as required by law, and the sellers did not give any paperwork or receipts.
David Kitching, Stockton Council's trading standards manager said: "I would urge residents to be cautious and think carefully before agreeing to buy fish from these people.
"The age and origins of the fish are not known, they could have been previously frozen or be of poor quality. The fish is often wrongly described and you may get a lot less than promised."
