An illegal taxi driver has had his vehicle confiscated following a swoop by licensing officers in Middlesbrough. Council officers and police were joined by officers from the Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and Customs and Excise for the clamp down on Saturday.
A number of prohibition notices for defective vehicles were issued and two drivers were found to be operating without a licence or insurance.
One held only a provisional driving licence so his vehicle was confiscated.
'A strong warning'
In addition, officials found one unlicensed hackney carriage driver and one private hire driver illegally plying for hire. All now face prosecution.
VOSA issued 16 prohibition notices for faults including defective tyres, headlights and brakes.
Councillor Barry Coppinger, executive member for community safety and leisure said: "This is an example of agencies coming together to help ensure the safety of the travelling public and ensure that the taxi trade in Middlesbrough maintains high standards.
"It sends out a strong warning that we are vigilant and are determined to stop pirate operators making a nuisance of themselves and putting members of the public at risk."
