A 19m modern art project for the north-east of England is nearing completion after two years of work. The Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (Mima) has transformed two hectares of brown field land in the town centre.
It was proposed following the success of Gateshead's Baltic complex, and is expected to attract thousands of art lovers to the Tees Valley.
Works by artists such as LS Lowry and David Hockney will be on display. Mima should be open before the end of 2006.
Since construction started in July 2004 well over 1,000 works of art have been added to the museum's collection.
These include contemporary international jewellery and one of the most important ceramics collections in the country, according to Middlesbrough Council.
Designed by Dutch architects Erick van Egeraat Associated, Mima will have eight exhibition spaces, an education suite, auditorium, conservation studio, workshops and art stores.
