Chart-topping heart throb Carl Pemberton - one half of X Factor duo Journey South - almost drowned after being swept into a swollen stream. The 25-year-old singer drove his car across a ford in Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough, on Thursday, and water started to pour into the vehicle.
He crawled out but was knocked over by strong currents and swept downstream.
Mr Pemberton, from nearby Coulby Newham, spent five minutes in the water before managing to drag himself out.
The star raised the alarm at a local riding centre before being taken to hospital in Middlesbrough, where he was told he had escaped with just cuts and bruises.
He said: "It sends a shiver down my spine when I think about what could have happened.
"When I was in the water, I really thought that this was how it was going to end."
Mr Pemberton shot to fame with his elder brother Andy when they finished third out of 75,000 hopefuls in ITV1's X Factor.
They have since signed a record deal with Simon Cowell, and have seen their debut album hit the number one slot.
