Parents in plea for liver donor
Simon, Amy and Lennox Nicholson

A five-month-old baby boy could die within days if a donor cannot be found for a liver transplant, his parents have said.

Simon Nicholson and Amy Robinson, from Guisborough on Teesside, are holding a daily vigil at the cotside of their desperately ill son in hospital.

Lennox was born weighing 7lb 1oz on 21 June and appeared to have no problems.

But he developed jaundice and chronic liver problems. A later operation found his bile ducts were completely blocked.

He has been transferred to Leeds St James University Hospital, where the couple issued an appeal for help in finding a donor.

Parents Simon, 21, and Amy, 20, have taken turns to sleep at the world famous "Jimmy's" hospital so their frail but battling son is never alone.

Major operation

Mr Nicholson said: "We go to bed every night with butterflies thinking this will be the night he will get his transplant.

"We have a pager with us at all times if we ever leave the hospital in case something happens."

Doctors have told the young parents they will use half of a donated adult liver to save Lennox and the other half would be used to save another person's life.

But they say they must locate the right tissue type within the next 11 days or less, otherwise another major operation will have to be undertaken.

Mrs Nicholson added: "Everyone is just waiting on tenterhooks for the ward phone to ring.

"It's sad someone has to lose a loved one for this to happen. But it would mean our son can have a normal life."

Liver surgeon Mark Stringer, who would carry out the operation, said: "Lennox is very poorly and has gone through an awful lot and now he needs a transplant as soon as possible."
