Schools to get 20mph speed limit
A 20mph speed limit could be introduced outside every school in a Teesside town council bosses have revealed.

Hartlepool Borough Council says it wants to reduce the risk of accidents involving youngsters near schools.

A 20mph limit is to be introduced at two primary schools in the town, but a public consultation exercise will consider widening the scheme.

A final decision on whether to impose speed restrictions is due to be taken in February 2006.

'Real concern'

A spokesman for Hartlepool Council said the consultation would take in evidence from schools, traffic management staff and the Cleveland Casualty Reduction Group.

The spokesman added: "Road safety is an area of real concern, particularly for children and young people.

"This inquiry is providing the public with the opportunity to be instrumental in ensuring the routes to school are safer for the children of Hartlepool."
