Lib Dems choose Hartlepool runner
Jody Dunn
Jody Dunn is the first candidate to be announced
The Liberal Democrats have announced the first candidate for the by-election in MP Peter Mandelson's constituency of Hartlepool.

Barrister Jody Dunn was chosen from a shortlist of candidates at a meeting of the constituency party in Hartlepool on Thursday.

Mr Mandelson will vacate the seat later this year after accepting a European Commissioner's post.

Labour and the Conservatives are in the process of selecting candidates.

Mallon not standing

Former television presenter and Euro MP Robert Kilroy-Silk has said he is "seriously considering" standing as a candidate for the UK Independence Party.

The Labour Party reportedly considered Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon as a candidate for the seat.

But Mr Mallon said he would not be seeking any nominations because of his mayoral commitments.

The Labour candidate is expected to be announced on Friday.
