Protest against development plans
Coatham housing development
The Coatham development will include homes and leisure facilities
Protesters are due to march on Teesside on Wednesday against plans for a leisure and housing development.

Proposals for the Coatham Enclosure site, in Redcar, include the building of 250 new homes, a hotel, swimming pool, visitor tower and bingo hall.

Protesters, who have collected a petition signed by 6,000 people, say it will mean the loss of open space, and they have not been properly consulted.

But Coatham councillor Irene Kerr said there had been public consultations.

Protesters are hoping that around 300 to 400 people turn up for the march, which will end up at Redcar Town Hall, where the petition will be handed in.

'Regular newsletters'

Coatham resident Charles Davis said: "Over the past 12 years we have seen the loss of a lot of open space in Redcar.

"Although there has been some consultation it has been very low key.

"It seems the council are trying to ramroad the deal through against a lot of local residents' wishes.

"Whilst we are not against all the decisions, we would like them to modify the plans."

However, Ms Kerr, who represents the Coatham Ward said: "We have been trying everything we can think of to include the public.

"There have been public consultations, and newsletters sent out on a regular basis.

"The plans have already undergone changes and we are trying to find a compromise that will keep everyone happy."
