Violence mars Boro's euro match

Boro go on to the next round after a 1-1 draw
Riot police were called as violence flared before Middlesbrough's first competitive away game in Europe.

There was trouble minutes before the kick-off of the second leg of the UEFA Cup first round tie between Boro and the Czech Republic side Banik Ostrava.

It involved a running battle between around 200 fans and a number of seats were ripped up.

Police officers with batons and riot shields brought the situation under control as the teams took to the pitch.

Middlesbrough had been given a 900-ticket allocation for the game but several hundreds more travelled to the Czech Republic, where they were able to buy black market tickets, which meant some were seated among home fans.

Despite the trouble, the game started on time, with a 1-1 draw on the night earning Boro a place in the second round with a 4-1 aggregate win.
