Thieves targeting women drivers
Police on Teesside are warning women drivers to keep their car doors locked following a spate of thefts at traffic lights.

Officers said a group of youths have been targeting women drivers - opening passenger doors and stealing handbags.

The thieves have already targeted Acklam Road, Ladgate Lane, Martin Road and Park Road South, in Middlesbrough.

A 19-year-old man was arrested on Thursday in relation to a recent theft and released on bail.

Lock doors

The youths behind the thefts have been described as aged between 17 and 22, white, and usually wear hoods or caps.

Sergeant Iona Leigh-Jones, of Cleveland Police, issued a warning to woman drivers on Friday.

She said: "Try to keep car doors locked, especially at traffic lights and keep handbags out of sight.

"If anyone does try to open your door, don't be afraid to sound your horn as this can be a deterrent."
