Good news for milk farmers
About 200 farmers protested outside the creamery
Cumbrian dairy farmers have said they are pleased a cheese company has decided to give them more money for their milk.

Farmers had picketed the Dairy Crest plant in Aspatria, Cumbria, two months ago, demanding a 2p per litre increase in the price they were paid.

Dairy Crest confirmed on Thursday that it is to pay up - but only for milk that will be used to make cheese.

In October, about 200 farmers from Cumbria and Scotland mounted a protest outside the dairy

Farmers from Cumbria and Scotland joined forces for the protest outside the Dairy Crest plant to highlight what they claimed was a shortfall in the price the company pays for its milk.

Ian Bulman from the National Farmers' Union in Cumbria hopes a further agreement can soon be reached for all milk.

He said: "Obviously Dairy Crest are in the business to make money, which they are exceptionally good at.

"At the end of the day there should be enough in a litre of milk for everyone to make a living out of."
