Asda to reopen after deluge
Asda Hartlepool
Shoppers were ankle-deep in water on Sunday

An Asda store on Teesside which had to close after heavy storms on Sunday is to reopen on Monday.

A heavy deluge came down over the region at 1100 BST, leaving many streets flooded and the store in Hartlepool leaking water.

There were 1,000 shoppers in the hypermarket when part of the roof came down, leaving some parts of the store in ankle-deep water.

The store had to close while the damage is assessed, but was due to reopen at 1100 BST on Monday.

A handful of shoppers were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure after slipping on the wet floors.

The Met Office issued a severe weather warning.

Racing abandoned

Lifeboats were called out from Redcar, Staithes, Teesmouth and Hartlepool to deal with seven mayday situations.

In one incident a man died and his friend was being treated for hypothermia.

On land, Saltburn and Darlington experienced severe flooding during the rain.

Church Lane in Acklam was flooded, with water reaching car bonnet level in some places, and Middlesbrough Council's out-of-hours emergency line was swamped with calls.

Sunday's meeting at Redcar was also abandoned due to standing water on the course.

Billingham's Annual Folklore Festival was also been badly affected.
