Plans to build a new library in a deprived area of Brighton have been approved by a local authority.

Brighton and Hove City Council said the Wellsbourne Centre would also house a cafe, conference rooms, an advice centre and children's services.

The council was awarded £5.3m of government funding last year to build the new complex alongside Whitehawk Primary School.

It hopes the new facility will become a "community hub" when it opens in 2011.
