University may build at barracks

Preston Barracks
The former Ministry of Defence site in Lewes Road has become derelict

Student accommodation and a university business school could be built on a derelict barracks site in Brighton.

The plan, which would also include new residential homes, business space, shops and public open space, is being prepared for Preston Barracks.

An earlier scheme for homes and offices was abandoned in March when the property crash made it unviable.

Brighton and Hove City Council is working on the new plan with the University of Brighton.

The council said the scheme, which would create about 500 jobs, would take in the barracks site and university land on either side of Lewes Road.

'Really impressive'

There would be about 500 units of student accommodation, which would free up family homes elsewhere in the city and lessen the impact of "studentification" on residential areas.

"The vision would radically improve this neglected area," said Councillor Ted Kemble.

"The idea would be to provide a really impressive and integrated gateway to the city."

The council's cabinet is expected to give the go-ahead to the further collaboration with the university at a meeting on 17 September.

It is hoped the scheme will be put out to tender in October for preparation of a masterplan and a design study completed by February 2010.
