WWI veteran campaigner made MBE

The founder of the First World War Veterans' Association has been made an MBE in the New Year Honours List.

Dennis Goodwin, of Worthing, West Sussex, was recognised for services to the group which helps the last remaining survivors of the conflict.

Mr Goodwin is a close friend of the UK's oldest man Henry Allingham, who celebrated his 112th birthday in June.

He also recently helped co-write a book about Mr Allingham's life which was published in September.

Mr Allingham, also from Sussex, is the last survivor of the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and the last original member of the Royal Air Force.

Mr Goodwin said the veteran was a recluse when he first met him.

Since then Mr Goodwin has acted as Mr Allingham's chaperone when he travels to events to keep the memory of those who fell in World War I alive.

Others recognised in the New Year's Honours list from Sussex include Capt Michael Gordon-Lennox, of Midhurst, who is made an OBE.

The former chairman of the charity St Dunstan's was recognised for services to visually impaired ex-servicemen and women.

Cricket commentator and journalist Christopher Martin-Jenkins becomes an MBE for services to sport.

Robert John Parsons, 65, of Mile Oak, Portslade, is appointed an an MBE for services to art.

Mr Parsons, who has worked at the College of Arms for 43 years, said: "I'm very pleased about it. Of course it's a great honour to be given a pat on the back."

Joy William, assistant chief officer of East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, also becomes an MBE for services to local government.
