Thousands enjoy bonfire spectacle

Lewes bonfire celebrations
More than 50,000 people are thought to have attended the event

Tens of thousands of people crowded into the narrow streets of a Sussex town to watch torch-lit processions at its fireworks celebrations.

The event in Lewes, where six bonfire societies parade through the town with flaming torches and firecrackers, is one of the largest in the country.

Sussex Police described the event as a success, but said 10 people were arrested for public order offences.

Five people needed hospital treatment for minor injuries.

Police estimate that more than 50,000 people, including numerous local residents, attended this year's Lewes bonfire, with more than 19,000 travelling into the town by train.

'Largely successful'

The force described the event as the largest annual policing operation in Sussex, with in excess of 400 officers deployed this year to help ensure public safety.

Supt Grenville Wilson, operation commander, said: "Given the size of the crowds, this year's event was largely successful from a police perspective.

"Aside from a small minority who behaved irresponsibly, the vast majority of people were simply in Lewes to enjoy the spectacle and acted sensibly."

East Sussex Fire and Rescue said they dealt with just a couple of small-scale bonfire related incidents.
