The parents of a 22-year-old soldier from East Sussex who was killed in a suicide attack in Afghanistan on Sunday have said "he died a hero".

Pte Daniel Gamble, from Uckfield, lost his life alongside two others, bringing the total number of British military personnel killed in the country to 100.

Paul Gamble said he would remember his son with pride "doing what he wanted to do to the best of his ability".

His brother Jason added: "I looked up to him, he was a really good friend."

He said: "We did everything together, and I just miss him."

Final conversation

Pte Gamble was killed alongside Pte Nathan Cuthbertson, 19, from Sunderland, and Pte Charles David Murray, 19, of Carlisle.

They were all part of 2nd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment.

Sapper Martin Little, 21, from 9 (Para) Squadron Royal Engineers, who is from Preston, Lancashire, was injured.

Mr Gamble said his son joined the parachute regiment because "he wanted to be the best of the best" and was "an achiever".

He went out to Afghanistan as a linguist - one of only 10 in the whole regiment who had learnt Pashtu.

"I'll always remember him how we last saw him - a handsome boy willing to go and fight for his country," his father said.

His wife Georgina added that they had spoken to their son the day before he died and that he had been very positive.

"He was looking forward to coming home for his R&R, and we're just glad that we got to speak to him," she said.
