Blue plaque idea for Dame Anita
Kensington Gardens in Brighton
The first Body Shop was set up in Brighton's cultural quarter
Labour councillors in Brighton and Hove have proposed a blue plaque in memory of the late Anita Roddick at the site of her first Body Shop.

The trailblazing store was opened in 1976 in Kensington Gardens, in the city's North Laine cultural quarter.

Councillor Gill Mitchell, leader of the Labour group in Brighton and Hove, said: "We want to honour the life of this remarkable woman."

Dame Anita died from a brain haemorrhage on Monday evening.

'Real inspiration'

The 64-year-old's Body Shop chain brought ethically sourced cosmetics to the retail mainstream.

Ms Mitchell said: "Anita Roddick was a real inspiration to business women and someone of whom Brighton and Hove is rightly proud."

The blue plaque proposal will be formally submitted in a motion at the next full council meeting on 18 October.

The site of the first Body Shop is now occupied by an independent opticians.

Dame Anita died at St Richard's Hospital, in Chichester, West Sussex, with her family by her bedside.
