A contemporary arts venue in Sussex is opening its doors to the public for the final time. The Gardner Arts Centre, based on the University of Sussex campus on the outskirts of Brighton, is closing after 38 years due to a lack of funding.
The Grade II-listed building needs �6m worth of repairs, and the centre cannot get an arts council grant without it.
The final curtain will come down on Wednesday after a performance by a Hip Hop theatre company.
Funding withdrawn
The decision to close the 480-seat venue, which promoted more than 300 events each year, was taken last December.
It follows the withdrawal of funding from Brighton and Hove City Council and increasing competition from other facilities in the city.
The centre opened in 1969 and was one of the first university campus arts centres in England.
The university has yet to decide what to do with the structure.
