City rewarded with transport cash
Transport improvements in Brighton have been given a cash boost of 5.5m from a government grant.

City councillor Gill Mitchell, chairwoman of the transport committee, said it was a funding increase of 3%.

She said it was a reward for the good results the council got from government for its local transport plan.

The council was now set to deliver a range of projects in 2007/08 that would be considered by the environment committee next week, she added.

Real-time information

Key projects for the next financial year include road safety measures, and a safer routes to school scheme, she said.

Plans for public transport include accessible bus stops, real time bus information and improvement in punctuality.

The A259 will be improved between Saltdean and the Ovingdean roundabout in partnership with East Sussex County Council.

And improvements are planned for Pool Valley Coach Station, Brighton, Hove and Portslade railway stations, a cycle route, walking facilities, street lighting, and road and pavement repairs.

The council will also promote sustainable travel, travel awareness, and work started on strengthening Kings Road Arches will be completed.
