Liz Thomas was inspired by the desire to recycle materials |
A sculpture made from broken pieces of china bought at car boot and jumble sales has won a 250 People's Prize in an art competition in Surrey. The sculpture, Poor Celine, is the work of Farnham artist Liz Thomas. It was one of 51 works chosen for a summer exhibition at The Lightbox in Woking from over 200 entered for the first Surrey Open Art Competition. Over 2,500 people who visited the exhibition voted for their favourite, with Poor Celine a clear winner. The china pieces are glued on to a wooden base in the shape of a head. Ms Thomas said the idea originated from a desire to recycle materials. She studied art in her teens, but began clay modelling and stone carving classes about 15 years ago. When the teacher moved, her pupils started their own pottery studio, called Farnham Sculpture, in Wrecclesham. A panel of judges also chose a competition winner, Anne Nolan, from Woking, who was awarded the 500 Hutley Art Prize.
