People in Surrey are being given the chance to have a hand in one of the opening installations at a new 7m art gallery and museum. Make Your Mark, run by the Lightbox project in Woking, is seeking handprints from people of all ages for when the gallery opens this summer.
An artist will take all the prints and transform them into a display.
The scheme received 10,000 lottery funding from Awards For All towards materials and staffing costs.
The Lightbox Gallery and Museum is the culmination of more than a decade's work to create such an attraction in Woking.
The Lightbox brand already exists in the town, running arts activities and projects for local people.
Now the Make Your Mark scheme is spearheading the final push towards the gallery's opening.
"It would be absolutely fantastic if we topped 20,000 handprints," said Lightbox director Marilyn Scott.
"We want to go out to day centres, old people's homes and hospices, community and neighbourhood groups, and Brownies, Guides, Scouts and school groups."
Ms Scott said all the paints and materials were provided and participants could be as creative as they wanted to be.
The gallery will also house touring exhibitions, local art and a permanent collection.
The museum section will include recorded memories of people who live or have lived in Woking.
