Suffolk's health service tackles childhood obesity |
Obese children and their parents are being put through a 10-week regime of exercise and diet advice to encourage them to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Pupils in Suffolk schools are being recruited onto a scheme described as an active, fun-based programme.
Suffolk Primary Care Trust starts its first programme this month and 300 children and parents will take part.
A spokesman said: "Activities will help boost cardiovascular fitness, exercise tolerance, nutrition and self-esteem."
Nutrition sessions
The Mind, Exercise, Nutrition and Do-it (MEND) programme is designed to help families learn practical ways to address the problems of childhood obesity.
Organisers said that MEND was not a diet, and the focus was not simply on losing weight.
The programme includes swimming and games, nutrition sessions and a recipe-tasting evening.
Behavioural management techniques will also be used to encourage children to be more active and change their eating habits.
