A multi-million pound incineration plant which would produce energy from rubbish may be needed in Suffolk to meet future waste disposal needs. A plan, which is in its early stages, is being put forward to Suffolk county councillors next week.
A report to the council's cabinet committee is asking for the go-ahead to investigate the building of an incinerator in the county.
It says using landfill sites to dispose of waste is becoming more costly.
It could cost the county an extra �15m a year by 2012/2013 - which could put an extra �62 on the average council tax bill, the report adds.
Councillor Eddy Alcock, portfolio holder for the environment, said: "Landfill is no longer the answer. It is bad for the environment and in the future will cost a fortune."
The issue will be raised at Suffolk County Council's cabinet meeting on 31 October.
