Conservatives and Lib Dems made major gains at the expense of Labour in the battle for Ipswich Borough Council. The 2006 election saw the Conservatives gain three seats, the Lib Dems gain two and the Labour Party lose five. But the council remains with no one party in overall control with 18 Labour members, 19 Conservatives, two Independents and nine Lib Dems. The council fell to no overall control in 2004 after many years in Labour hands. At Waveney, the Conservatives held on to the council, making four gains - three from independents and one from Labour. Mark Bee, leader of the Tories at Waveney, said: "It has been a very good night for the Conservative Party. "We are delighted to strengthen our majority and we have been helped by Labour's problems."
