A 23-year-old man is rowing across the Atlantic in a bid to become the fastest and youngest oarsman to complete the 3,000 mile trip. Oliver Hicks from Thorpeness in Suffolk set out from New Jersey in the United States on Friday to beat a 62-day record to reach Falmouth in Cornwall.
Fewer than 150 have rowed the Atlantic solo and only 12 have completed the west-east trip.
Mr Hicks said he had wanted to do the trip since he was 13-years-old.
He said: "I will be hitching a lift on the north-eastern side of the current and winds which will assist my passage to the UK."
Weather permitting, Mr Hicks will row non-stop for around 14 hours a day, stopping only to eat and sleep.
Living on dehydrated ready meals, he will pull more than 7,000 strokes a day and faces extreme cold, severe blisters and hand cramps.
