Drive to clean up racing industry
Insiders with information about race fixing and other scams are being encouraged to come forward in a drive to cut crime in the racing industry.

The scheme was launched at Newmarket, Suffolk, home of racing in UK.

Crimestoppers has been asked by the Jockey Club and Racecourse Association to target racing in an effort to ensure the sport remains free from scandal.

Anyone in the industry with information is being asked to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 anonymously.

At the launch Paul Scotney, the Jockey club's director of security, said Crimestoppers had a proven track record at helping solve crime.

There may be all sorts of reasons why people with information about criminal activity within racing may feel intimidated about contacting police
Dave Cording, Crimestoppers' director of operations
"We are appealing for information on all forms of criminal activity which relate to the sport of horse racing," he said.

"And we are specifically requesting those who may have information involving corruption or malpractice to use with confidence the Crimestoppers number."

Dave Cording, Crimestoppers' director of operations, said they hoped to provide a conduit for people both inside and outside of the industry who had information about criminal activity.

"There may be all sorts of reasons why people with information about criminal activity within racing may feel intimidated about contacting police.

"What we and the Jockey Club hope is that, by providing this free call line - 0800 555 111 - we will give those people an opportunity to pass on information to the police.

"The Jockey Club has long said that it intends to make sure that the sport is clean. We are hoping that we can help them to do that with this new partnership."
