Schools receive 2.8m for sports
Sports facilities in two schools in the East have been given a 2.8m boost with Big Lottery funding.

Holbrook High School in Shotley, near Ipswich, Suffok, was given 2m, while Great Baddow High School in Chelmsford, Essex, received more than 840,000.

The money was given by the Fund's 750m New Opportunities for Physical Education and Sport programme.

Both of the schools plan to open their new facilities to the local community as well as nearby primary schools.

Funding for Holbrook High School, which currently has 550 students, will be used for the construction of a four court sports hall, a fitness room, and a dance room with changing and storage space.

'Enhance sporting experience'

Headteacher Jenny Lee said: "The school was absolutely delighted to learn that our bid for an indoor sports centre has been successful.

"Having a sports hall on the school site will not only increase the activities that we can offer our pupils; it will also provide a much-needed centre for community activities on the peninsula," she added.

Great Baddow High School plans to use the award for improved access to existing outdoor pitches and new changing facilities for the existing four court sports hall and swimming pool.

"The new changing and reception areas will greatly enhance the sporting experience gained by our students and the community," said the school's director of PE and Sport, Paul Farmer.
