River swans saved from starvation

The 200-strong flock have been fed grain every day
A flock of swans threatened with starvation has been saved - thanks to the landlady of the local pub.

For the past 100 years, 200 swans on the River Orwell in Ipswich relied on grain from Pauls Maltings for food, but the factory closed in November 2004.

Now Celia McWilliam, landlady of the nearby Swann Inn, is to help with the 6 a day needed for their food. The grain is stored in the pub cellar.

Ms McWilliam told BBC News she was also going to help to distribute the grain.

"If someone doesn't feed them, they will die. I can't have that," she said.
