 A 4th or 5th Century glass bucket proves a treasure at auction |
An Anglo-Saxon bucket crafted from glass and found in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, has fetched �116,000 at Bonham's auction in London. The green glass object - one of 25 lots of antiquities from an anonymous seller's collection - was found at a graveyard excavation in 1972. It is thought to have been buried in the 4th or 5th centuries. It was found in a man's tomb alongside an iron spearhead, shield boss and small knife. The discovery was made on the west side of Bury St Edmunds during excavations at an early Anglo-Saxon cemetery containing 68 graves.
