Greene King's stable includes four popular tipples

Greene King says it will stay in the centre of Bury St Edmunds, despite bosses admitting they would like more room for expansion.

The company has been a major employer for 300 years, but is now operating at full capacity and has just expanded its chain of pubs to over 2,000.

Managing director Rooney Annan says there are no plans to move from the current site.

"It is fair to say it is a tight spot," he said.

"That means we have to think a bit more cleverly and work harder with our local colleagues and neighbours to work out what is the best fit between being able to expand and live comfortably together as neighbours."

On Friday, the brewer bought 432 public houses for �654m from Luton-based Laurel Pub Company.

Greene King has been on the same site in the Suffolk town since at least 1700.
