Rescue for cash-strapped lifeboat
Felixstowe volunteer lifeboat
A lifeboat at one Britain's busiest ports can come out of the boatshed
A businessman from Suffolk has pledged 3,000 to save a volunteer lifeboat serving one of Britain's busiest ports after its sponsor ran out of cash.

Felixstowe lifeboat is locked into its secure boathouse berth and was set to remain there for at least two years.

The crew needed 3,000 for fuel before the lifeboat could operate again.

Sponsor Suffolk Coastal District Council said financial constraints now prevented them from offering funds to keep the service going

John Cresswell, one of the lifeboat volunteers, said: all the volunteers had gone through their winter training and updated their skills.

But, after the council sponsorship was withdrawn they had no money to buy fuel for the vessel.

After hearing about the crew's plight on BBC Look East on Friday, a viewer from Suffolk pledged 3,000 to cover the fuel charges for this year.
