People who litter can pay fines instantly or face court |
People caught dropping litter on the streets in a Suffolk town are now liable for a 50 on-the-spot fine. Ipswich Borough Council and Suffolk Police are getting tough on those who throw anything from cigarette butts to apple cores on the street.
Wardens and community support officers will be on patrol to enforce the new measures beginning on Thursday.
Rodney Cook, a council spokesman, said: "The public have been asking for enforcement of laws against littering."
The 50 fine is an amount set by central government.
Mr Cook said 750,000 is spent each year to keep Ipswich clean.
If litterbugs do not pay the fine, he added, they will go to court.
