Lower limits just 'hold up traffic'
Speed sign on A14
Lower speed limits are being trialled in Suffolk
Plans to lower speed limits on the A140 in Suffolk have been criticised by Norfolk County Council.

The road linking Ipswich and Norwich has a bad safety record as more than 80 people have died in accidents there over the past 20 years.

Suffolk County Council has proposed making 50 mph the maximum speed on its stretch of the A140, with speed limits in some areas restricted to 30 or 40 mph.

But Tory Adrian Gunson, a councillor in Norfolk, said: "Suffolk's solution will not lead to a better road - it will hold up important traffic from Norwich to Ipswich.

'Disappointing for motorists'

"There will still be quite a large number of accidents, because of the amount of traffic using the road.

"It's disappointing for road users."

In September, Suffolk decided to experiment with a 50 mph limit along its section of the road over an 18-month trial period.

A 30 mph limit is also being trialled between Earl Stonham and Stonham Parva - where the limit had been 40 mph.

Suffolk said the lower limits would be made permanent if they successfully lower the number of crashes on the road.
