Stone curlews nest in shallow nests on open ground |
A rare stone curlew chick that lives a few feet from the main runway at RAF Lakenheath has been successfully ringed by the RSPB. The chick is one of two who have survived since the eggs hatched two weeks ago.
There are only 250 stone curlew pairs in Britain and two thirds of them are in Breckland.
Ringing them is an important part of monitoring and supporting the birds' welfare.
Tim Cowan from the RSPB's Stone Curlew Project who ringed the chick on Tuesday together with Paul Batchelor said: "We aim to ring every chick there is.

"I should think we ring 90% of them, so it's been very successful."
The spot where the nest is situated has been designated a bird conservation area.
But the nesting site did not find favour with Paul Batchelor.
"I wouldn't put my eggs here," he said.
