A referendum over the future of the political system in Stoke-on-Trent is being held. More than 186,000 voters were being asked if they want an elected council leader or an elected mayor, both with a cabinet, to run the city. This year a government commission said the city had to change its system in which the elected mayor and chief executive made all decisions. The result of Thursday's referendum is due on Friday. Two groups were set up last month to campaign for the different options. Councillors have said they prefer having the option of an elected council leader with a cabinet.
