Driver accused over girls' deaths

A lorry driver is standing trial accused of killing two girls who died in a road crash in Staffordshire.

Robert Murray, of Wrockwardine Wood, Telford, Shropshire, is accused of causing death by dangerous driving.

Rebecca Casterton, 13, and Lauren Brooks, 12, died when the car they were in collided with his lorry on the A38 in Clay Mills, near Burton, in January.

Mr Murray, who has pleaded not guilty, used two mobile phone shortly before the crash, Stafford Crown Court heard.

Prosecutors claim he had been calling his wife and was distracted after making the call or by what he did with the phone afterwards.

Rebecca, from Barton-under-Needwood, near Burton, died at the scene while Lauren, from Burton, died in hospital. Her mother, who was driving the Renault Clio they were in, suffered minor injuries.

The trial continues.
