Arrests follow football trouble
Britannia Stadium
People were sought after violence and racist chanting
Eleven people have been arrested by officers investigating disorder and racist chanting at a Staffordshire football ground.

The arrests mark the start of an operation, expected to last several days, where detectives hope to quiz more than 40 people about the disorder.

The trouble took place at Stoke City's Britannia Stadium following a match with Birmingham City in February.

The arrests were made across Stoke-on-Trent and north Staffordshire.

Those arrested will be questioned at Stoke-on-Trent police station. Arrangements have been made for others suspected of being involved to attend pre-arranged interviews.

'Just the start'

Det Sgt Steve Parker said it was the largest football disorder inquiry in Staffordshire for many years.

"Today's arrests are just the start of this stage of the investigation and we have made arrangements with a number of people to present them selves to police over the next few days," he said.

"Staffordshire Police, working with Stoke City FC, has made great strides in driving those who involve themselves in disorder away from the club."

February's events were a set back which make the force event more determined to continue its work, he added.
