Bridie Spicer said she hopes her son died for a reason
The mother of one of three British soldiers killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq said he wanted to be there and loved the country's people.

Bridie Spicer said Pte Leon Spicer, 26, from Tamworth, fought to get fit after breaking his leg so he could go.

Pte Spicer, Pte Philip Hewitt, 21, of Tamworth and 2nd Lt Richard Shearer, 26, of Nuneaton were attacked in Amarah on Saturday.

Ms Spicer said her son wanted to help build peace in Iraq.

"He was full of life and he lived life to the full," she said.

"We hope our son died for a reason - for peace for those who really want it."

She added her son was proud to be a Stafford and proud to serve his country.

"He wanted to be in Iraq, he had broken his leg last year and he fought to get fit. He wanted to be with his mates," she said.

"He said the people of Iraq were lovely."

Pte Hewitt was driving one of three Land Rovers on patrol in Almara when the device was detonated.

He later died from his injuries. Pte Spicer and 2nd Lt Shearer were killed instantly.

A candle has been lit at the Staffordshire regiment's chapel in Lichfield Cathedral as a memorial.
