Letters to warn on underage sales

Adults could face an 80 fine for buying alcohol for youngsters
Off-licences are being sent letters warning them to remain vigilant about selling alcohol to underage customers.

The move by Staffordshire Police aims to stem a rising incidence of anti- social behaviour by young drinkers.

The initiative covers the Mow Cop, Talke, Kidsgrove, Audley, Madeley and Loggerheads areas.

Shop owners can get advice from Kidsgrove police on helping to prevent alcohol getting into the hands of youngsters.

The Commander of Kidsgrove Local Policing Unit, Inspector Derek Roberts, says: "Obviously it can sometimes be difficult to assess some young people's ages, but if in doubt they should ask for an appropriate proof of age document as they would be committing an offence to sell to someone under the age of 18."

Police are working with Staffordshire Trading Standards on a programme of test purchases.

Adults who buy alcohol for young people aged under 18 also could face an 80 fixed penalty notice.
