The chairman of Port Vale Football Club says he would like to rename their ground the Reginald Mitchell Stadium in honour of the inventor of the Spitfire. Bill Bratt has written to an American billionaire, Sidney Frank, who wants to spend millions of pounds to raise the profile of the Stoke-on-Trent pioneer.
Mr Bratt says he would like to have a statue of the inventor and a visitors' centre at the Vale Park ground.
He would also favour acquiring the Spitfire from the Potteries Museum.
Greatest creation
The Port Vale chairman said: "It would be very nice to have a statue of him two miles from his birthplace."
A statue has been commissioned for London's Science Museum, thanks to the American magnate.
Mr Frank, 85, has started a project to teach school pupils around this country about the inventor's achievements, it was revealed this week.
Mr Mitchell died in 1937, a year after the Spitfire took to the skies.
He was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 38 as he started work on what was to become his greatest creation.
