The Ministry of Defence (MOD) says a man from Staffordshire is believed to be among those who died when an air force Hercules plane crashed in Iraq.

Sgt Robert O'Connor, an engineering technician with the RAF from Fazeley in Tamworth, was due to get married later this year.

An MOD statement said Sgt O'Connor, 38, was missing believed killed after the crash on 30 January.

An investigation has been launched into the cause.

'Sadly missed'

Sgt O'Connor joined the RAF in October 1985 and was then posted to RAF Lyneham, where he spent the vast majority of his career.

"He was held in the highest esteem and regard by his work colleagues and superiors for his knowledge, dedication and professionalism," the MOD statement added.

"During his tours, he was an active sportsman and a keen participant in all aspects of the fabric of station life.

"He will be sadly missed by his loved ones, colleagues and friends, particularly the small section of engineers who worked closely with him.

"All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at the time."
