Licensees in Newcastle-under-Lyme are being issued with drug testing kits to check whether drinks have been spiked. It follows police concerns over an increase in the number of young women making rape allegations.
Staffordshire Police say such claims are often difficult to prove, and hope the testing will reduce the potential for assaults.
Meanwhile police in Crewe and Nantwich are blaming binge drinking on the increase in reports of rape.
Det Insp Alan Allman from Crewe police said he was seeing more cases where young women were getting excessively drunk and were not sure whether they had been sexually assaulted.
Mr Allman said all complaints were investigated but often it was difficult to prove.
