Phone boss region's 'richest man'

John Caudwell owns high street phone retailer Phones 4u
The Staffordshire mobile phone tycoon John Caudwell is the richest man in the Midlands, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.

The 16th annual list profiles the UK's 1,000 wealthiest people and families in Britain.

John Caudwell, owner of Phones 4u, is the region's first billionaire and retains his top place in the list with his wealth measured at �1.28bn.

A fortune of �40m is now required to enter the Sunday Times elite list.

Nationally he's the 21st richest person in the country.

Sir Anthony Bamford, the boss of Rocester based JCB is second in the Midlands with �700m worth of wealth.

A new entry is businessman, James Leavesley, who has a �60m fortune thanks to having stakes in two property companies including the developer St Modwen.

The Sunday Times Rich List is based on identifiable wealth, such as land, property, other assets such as art and racehorses, or significant shares in publicly quoted companies, and excludes bank accounts.
