Some road users have claimed that the road's prices are too high |
Discounted rates for motorists using the M6 Toll may be kept in place longer than planned in an effort to attract more people on to the road. The firm that runs the pay-as-you-go motorway has hinted its current fees may remain in place for some time.
The daytime charge of 2 for cars, 5 for vans and 10 for lorries, had been due to be increased after 10 million people had used the road.
That milestone is expected to be reached in the summer.
'Up to us'
Each charge was due to rise by 1 at that point, but Tom Fanning, the managing director of Midlands Expressway Limited (MEL), which runs the M6 Toll, said that could now change.
"We will be looking at the traffic flows at the time of the 10 million mark and will take a view whether we go straight to 3 for cars or something in between.
"In other words it is up to us when we implement the 3."
He said he was happy with the volume of traffic using the 27-mile 900 million route, which runs from Cannock to Coleshill.
The latest figures released by MEL show an average of 39,620 vehicles used the road each day last month - an increase of about 6% on February.
"It's still early days yet and I know everyone is always interested in the figures, in the revenue, the usual things people are quite rightly interested in, but I am very pleased with the way things have gone," Mr Fanning said.
