Scheme tackles arson attacks
Staffordshire Fire Service is launching a new programme aimed at reducing the number of young arsonists.

Xtinguish will work with youth offending services across the county and Stoke-on-Trent.

The scheme has already been piloted in Newcastle-under-Lyme and organisers say they have seen a change in the attitudes of teenagers.

Figures from the fire service have shown that 80% of calls to them turn out to be fires that have been started deliberately by juveniles.

Fire safety officer, Keith Stubbs, said "Young people are required by the youth courts to meet with a firefighter at their local fire station.

"They are then taken through a series of structured, weekly sessions that get them to understand the error and consequences of their ways."

Funding has been found to extend the scheme across Stoke and Staffordshire for the next three years.
