Security guards will become a permanent feature in the accident and emergency department at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire. The decision follows a pilot scheme which has seen violence towards staff dramatically cut.
The hospital trust employed a private security firm on a trial basis.
Hospital staff in the department had faced an increasing number of acts of violence and aggression.
They said the move had been a success in terms of cutting the number of incidents and the severity of such attacks.
Hospital managers have decided to employ their own team of six specially-trained security guards providing round the clock cover at the Princes Road department and the Haywood walk-in centre.
