An 11-year-old boy who died after being found in a critical condition at his West Sussex home was hanged, a post-mortem examination has found.

Ben Vodden was pronounced dead in hospital after an ambulance attended the house in Southwater, near Horsham.

Sussex Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, which happened on Tuesday.

Ben's parents and sister said they would "miss him desperately every day for the rest of our lives".

Paul and Caroline Vodden and their daughter Alice said in a tribute: "Ben was a wonderful, caring, happy and loyal person with a great sense of individuality.

'Friendly and caring'

"He had a wonderful way with words, and his lively personality and clever quips were a constant source of amusement to everyone who knew him.

"Ben was friendly and caring towards everyone he met, whether adults or children of any age, and he had a deep sense of loyalty towards his friends and family."

A book of condolence has been opened at Tanbridge House School, in Horsham, which he joined as a pupil in September.

A school statement said: "Ben, who is lovingly referred to in many of the tributes by his nickname 'Giggles', is remembered for his great sense of fun, his energy and his ability to make others laugh."

Ben's family said he was passionate about art, music and sport.

They are being supported by members of the United Reformed Church in Horsham.
