Bridge makes walkers' trail safer
Sussex Downs
The trail passes through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
A bridge to help people on the South Downs Way cross a busy trunk road is being opened.

The Highways Agency said trail users had found it "increasingly difficult" to cross the A26 in East Sussex.

The 650,000 bridge at Itford Farm, between Lewes and Newhaven, aims to help pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and disabled people.

A spokesman said it provided a safe route for people enjoying the "rural splendour" of the national trail.

The site is classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Designers opted for a wooden-clad bridge shaped to reflect the rolling hills of the Downland, the spokesman said.

It also has special wooden slats to provide sure footing for horses.
